The Hasmonean kings were rulers of an independent Judaea following Seleucid rule and prior to Roman occupation. They were the descendants of Mattathias the Hasmonean and among his sons were Judas Maccabeus who shook off the Seleucid rule of Antiochus IV and about which the Book of Maccabees was written. A fine piece of history for any collection.
